Kingsway College School

“Learning occurs everywhere and not only in the classroom”

This philosophy underpins the design of the new 12 classroom addition to the Kingsway College School, a private elementary school attached to the historically listed St. Georges-On-the-Hill Anglican church in Etobicoke. A three storey high atrium, featuring a 10 metre high “living wall”, serves as the “heart of the school” and central orienting device around which all of the circulation is organized. Breakout spaces on each floor overlooking the atrium offer unique venues for learning beyond the classroom environment. A super-insulated, high performance building envelope combined with state-of-the-art mechanical systems ensures long term energy savings for the client. The dramatically sloping site is taken advantage of to provide an outdoor amphitheatre and large windows to basement teaching areas.
